The National Assembly Committee on Sports and Culture has expressed strong dissatisfaction over the prolonged delays in completing the Kipchoge Stadium in Eldoret, putting the Ministry of Sports on notice over the stalled project.
During an inspection tour of the stadium, committee chairperson Dan Wanyama voiced the committee's frustration, citing that the stadium’s construction, which began years ago, has seen little progress.
“The timelines that are given must be met, and if that doesn't happen, heads must roll because we cannot continue doing things this way,” Wanyama said.
The stadium, named after legendary marathoner Eliud Kipchoge, is considered a vital facility for nurturing talent in the Rift Valley region—home to many of Kenya’s top athletes. Wanyama warned that continued inaction was a serious disservice to the nation’s sports fraternity.
The Ministry of Sports has reportedly committed to injecting Kshs. 300 million as a down payment to the contractor, following concerns raised about the lack of funds. The committee, however, remains vigilant and has pledged to closely monitor the progress.
According to the ministry, the delay in releasing funds is partly due to budgetary prioritization towards preparations for the upcoming African Nations Championship (CHAN), which has focused attention and resources on Nyayo and Kasarani stadiums in Nairobi.
Despite this, Wanyama emphasized that Kipchoge Stadium’s strategic importance should not be overlooked. The project, which is expected to cost Kshs. 3.5 billion upon completion, is seen as a game-changer for athletics and sports development in the country.
The committee has demanded timely action and full transparency going forward, as public patience continues to wear thin.
