Inspector General (IG) of the National Police Service (NPS), Mr. Douglas Kanja, today visited Angata Barikkoi in Narok County following the tragic events of Monday, April 28, where a violent confrontation between residents and police officers led to the deaths of five civilians and injuries to several officers.
The fatal clash occurred when residents resisted a court-sanctioned operation, preventing police from executing their duties. The IG expressed deep sorrow over the incident, describing the loss of lives as unfortunate and avoidable.
“I have already referred the matter to the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) for a thorough and impartial investigation,” said Mr. Kanja during a meeting with local leaders and residents. He confirmed that the investigation was already underway and assured the public of transparency and accountability.
Accompanied by top police leadership, including Deputy Inspector General (DIG-KPS) Mr. Eliud Lagat and Director of Criminal Investigations Mr. Mohamed Amin, the IG also announced a raft of upcoming reforms aimed at improving community policing and enhancing operational protocols in the region.
He urged residents to uphold the law and cooperate with security agencies to prevent further loss of life and property. “Peace is a shared responsibility,” Mr. Kanja stated. “We must all work together to ensure order is maintained.”
Political leaders present at the meeting included Senate Majority Leader Hon. Aaron Cheruiyot, Belgut MP Hon. Nelson Koech, and Emurua Dikirr MP Hon. Jonah Ngeno. All called for calm while demanding justice and accountability for the fatalities.
The IG was also accompanied by GSU Commandant Mr. Ranson Lolmodooni, Director of Operations (APS) Mr. Jackson Kangani, Rift Valley Regional Police Commander Mr. Jasper Ombati, and NPS Spokesperson Mr. Muchiri Nyaga.
The visit is seen as a critical step toward restoring trust between the police and the local community, amid rising tensions over police conduct and use of force in sensitive operations.
