Interior CS Kipchumba Murkomen Leads High-Level Security Meeting in Isiolo to Tackle Banditry and Drug Trafficking

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen on Tuesday led a high-level regional security meeting in Isiolo Town, bringing together top security officials from Isiolo, Meru, Laikipia, Samburu, and Marsabit counties. The strategic meeting aimed to evaluate the progress of ongoing security operations targeting persistent threats including banditry, cattle rustling, and drug trafficking in the Eastern and Rift Valley regions.

Addressing the media after the meeting, CS Murkomen emphasized the government’s unwavering commitment to restoring and maintaining peace in the region. “Our goal is to eliminate criminal networks that have long destabilized these counties. We are taking a coordinated, multi-agency approach to dismantle the infrastructure of banditry and illicit trade,” he stated.

During his visit, the CS toured the Isiolo Police Station where he engaged directly with officers on the ground. He commended them for their bravery and dedication in combating complex criminal activities under difficult conditions. “Your sacrifices are not in vain. The government stands firmly behind you and will continue to support your operations with the necessary resources and policy backing,” Murkomen affirmed.

The CS was accompanied by Deputy Inspector General of Kenya Police Service Eliud Lagat, Eastern Regional Commissioner Paul Rotich, Regional Police Commander Charles Naibei, Regional Administration Police Commander Lusweti Barasa, Isiolo County Commissioner Geoffrey Omoding, County Police Commander Moses Mutisya, AP Commander Mzungu Shaban, and other senior ministry officials.

Murkomen reiterated that the government’s strategy includes not only intensified security operations but also long-term development and community engagement initiatives to address the root causes of insecurity in the region. He also called on local leaders and residents to collaborate with law enforcement and share intelligence that could help disrupt criminal activities.

The security committees from the five counties presented progress reports and shared challenges, further enriching the discussion on actionable solutions. The Ministry of Interior pledged to follow up on these insights and continue high-level engagements across the region until lasting peace and stability are achieved.
