Irungu Nyakera and Rigathi Gachagua Call for Honest Leadership and an End to Broken Promises

Former Kenya International Convention Centre (KICC) Board Chairman Irungu Nyakera has called for a new era of leadership in Kenya, following a candid and wide-ranging conversation with former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua on Thursday.

Speaking after the meeting, Nyakera said the time had come for Kenya — and especially its capital, Nairobi — to move beyond political promises and begin delivering real change that improves people’s lives.

“Too many promises have been made to Kenyans, and far too few have been kept,” Nyakera said. “What people want now is not more talk, but action. We need leaders who show up, who listen, and who deliver.”

The two leaders reportedly discussed the growing disconnect between government institutions and the everyday struggles of ordinary Kenyans, from the cost of living to unemployment and systemic inefficiencies. According to Nyakera, Gachagua acknowledged that the current state of affairs has eroded public trust — and that the gap between politics and public service has never been wider.

Despite their criticisms of past and present leadership, both leaders expressed hope for Kenya’s future, pointing to the energy and resilience of the country’s youth, entrepreneurs, and communities.

“Kenya isn’t short of ideas or talent. We’re short of political will,” Nyakera said. “It’s time for a new generation of leadership — one that is rooted in service, honesty, and real results.”

Nyakera, a former Principal Secretary and longtime advocate for economic development and institutional reform, said he plans to spend the coming weeks engaging with citizens across the country to better understand their experiences and priorities.

“This new chapter that Kenyans are demanding — it’s already loading,” he added. “But it won’t be written in boardrooms or campaign rallies. It will be written by the people.”

The remarks come amid growing public discontent with the pace of development and service delivery, particularly in urban centers like Nairobi, where issues such as housing, sanitation, transport, and youth unemployment continue to dominate public discourse.

While neither Nyakera nor Gachagua confirmed any political plans, their joint call for accountability and renewed leadership is likely to resonate widely — and could signal a shift in the national conversation ahead of the next election cycle.
