Irungu Nyakera, the leader of the Farmers Party, has raised a powerful alarm about the state of Kenya’s economy, describing it as "bleeding" under the weight of soaring inflation, skyrocketing loan defaults, and a staggering national debt. The country is grappling with rising costs of living, a banking sector reluctant to lend, and nearly one trillion shillings in pending bills. Small businesses are collapsing, youth unemployment is rampant, and many families are struggling to make ends meet.
In his passionate call for accountability, Nyakera criticizes the country’s leaders for their apparent detachment from the realities facing ordinary Kenyans. While the nation’s challenges deepen, he observes, the country's leadership continues to operate in luxury, parading in convoys and choppers, offering little more than PR stunts and handouts.
"Kenya is not a canoe; it’s a mighty ship. Water may be leaking in, but big ships don’t sink overnight," Nyakera says. He acknowledges that the country has weathered some of the worst crises in its history, from the economic collapse of the Moi era to the aftermath of the 2007 post-election violence, terror attacks, grand corruption scandals, and the devastating effects of COVID-19. Despite these setbacks, Kenyans have stood resilient, even when the odds were stacked against them.
However, Nyakera warns that simply standing is no longer enough. It’s time for the country to rise again. In his view, the responsibility for this resurgence falls on the shoulders of all Kenyans, especially the youth, hustlers, and dreamers. They must demand that the UDA government fulfill the promises it made during the 2022 elections.
"It’s not about 2027, it’s about 2022," Nyakera asserts, stressing that the current government must be held accountable for delivering on the commitments made to the people of Kenya.
As the nation grapples with these challenges, Nyakera's message is clear: Kenya cannot afford to wait. It’s time for the people to demand change and ensure that the government’s promises are turned into tangible actions for the future.
