The Kakamega County Government has taken a significant step toward sustainable energy solutions by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Invest in Green Energy, a UK-based company. This partnership aims to introduce solar energy to county health facilities and educational institutions, aligning with Governor Fernandes Barasa’s vision for sustainable development and cost-effective energy solutions.
The initiative, dubbed the Empowering Kakamega County Solar Energy for Sustainable Education project, will see solar energy solutions implemented across various public institutions, with a particular focus on healthcare facilities and polytechnics. The goal is to reduce energy costs, ensure a consistent power supply, and contribute to the county's green energy transition.
The MoU was signed following a viability survey conducted in 2024, which assessed the feasibility of solar power integration into county institutions. Based on the findings, the partnership aims to foster a low-cost, sustainable energy transition, providing reliable and eco-friendly alternatives to the traditional power grid.
The agreement outlines the roles and responsibilities of both parties, with the county government tasked with facilitating the necessary licenses and approvals required to implement the project fully. As part of the partnership, Invest in Green Energy will oversee the installation and maintenance of the solar power systems.
The MoU signing ceremony was held at the Kakamega County Government headquarters and was attended by the County Secretary, who represented Governor Barasa. Also present were Ms. Peninah Mukabane, the CECM for Water, Natural Resources, Climate Change, and Environment, Ms. Vivian Mbaka, the County Attorney, and other senior county officers.
In her remarks, Ms. Mukabane highlighted the importance of the project in the county's efforts to address climate change and reduce dependence on non-renewable energy sources. “This partnership will not only improve energy access in our public institutions but also significantly reduce energy costs, allowing us to direct more resources into critical services like healthcare and education,” she said.
The integration of solar energy into Kakamega’s public institutions is a key milestone in the county’s commitment to environmental sustainability and efficient energy use. With the solar power systems expected to be installed over the coming months, the project promises to provide long-term benefits to residents and contribute to Kakamega’s overall development goals.
Governor Barasa, who could not attend the signing ceremony, expressed his enthusiasm for the initiative in a statement. “This MoU is a crucial part of our administration’s efforts to promote sustainable development, and I am confident that it will enhance the quality of services in our health and education sectors,” he said.
The project is expected to have a transformative impact, ensuring that Kakamega County’s healthcare and education institutions are powered by clean, reliable energy, while also reducing the environmental footprint of public services.
