Kalonzo Condemns Church Attack on Rigathi Gachagua as a “National Shame”

Tension gripped PCEA Mwiki Church in Kasarani on Sunday after chaos briefly disrupted a service attended by former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua. The incident, which saw unidentified individuals attempt to storm the church, has sparked outrage and condemnation across the political divide.

Security was momentarily compromised when the intruders approached shortly after Gachagua’s arrival. His security team quickly stepped in, shielding him from the disturbance as gunshots were heard around the compound. Police and security personnel moved swiftly to disperse the attackers and restore calm, allowing the church service to continue.

The attack has drawn sharp criticism, with Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka describing the incident as a national shame. He questioned why violence would be carried into a place of worship and condemned the perpetrators for what he termed as reckless and disrespectful behavior that undermines both faith and democracy.

Gachagua, speaking after the situation was brought under control, expressed concern over what he perceives as increasing efforts to suppress his freedom of movement and association. He noted that such confrontations, especially in sacred spaces, should not happen in a civilized society.

The former Deputy President was accompanied by a strong political delegation, including MPs James Gakuya (Embakasi North), Kamande Mwafrika (Roysambu), Amos Mwago (Starehe), Jayne Kihara (Naivasha), Benjamin Mejjadonk (Embakasi Central), Murang’a Senator Joe Nyutu, MP Mercy Gakuya, and former UDA Secretary General Cleophas Malala.

The Sunday incident has sparked a broader conversation about the state of political tolerance in the country and the need to safeguard democratic spaces and institutions from violence and intimidation.
