Kenya Flags Off U-20 National Football Team Ahead of 2025 Africa Cup of Nations

President William Ruto on Monday officially flagged off Kenya’s Under-20 men’s national football team at State House ahead of their participation in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament.

The team, which has been placed in Group B alongside African football powerhouses Nigeria, Morocco, and Tunisia, is expected to fly the country’s flag high as it competes in one of the continent’s most prestigious youth tournaments.

Speaking during the flag-off ceremony, President Ruto expressed confidence in the team and reiterated his government’s commitment to developing sports infrastructure and nurturing young talent across the country.

“We are setting up the right sports infrastructure to support our youth in harnessing and nurturing their talents. Our prime focus is to elevate Kenya’s profile globally and commercialise our football—just like we’ve successfully done in athletics,” said President Ruto.

The Head of State added that the flag-off symbolizes national unity and collective belief in the youth's ability to deliver on the continental stage. He encouraged the team to compete with discipline, pride, and determination.

The Ministry of Sports, under the leadership of Cabinet Secretary Ababu Namwamba, has intensified efforts to promote grassroots football and identify young talents through the Talanta Hela initiative and other youth programs. The President highlighted the importance of such programs in preparing Kenya to not only participate but also succeed in international competitions.

The 2025 U-20 AFCON is expected to take place in the early part of next year, and Kenya’s placement in a tough group underscores the need for rigorous preparation and strategic play.

As the country rallies behind the young stars, there is growing optimism that Kenya can make a strong statement in the tournament and take a significant step toward reclaiming its place in African football.
