The Kenya Women Parliamentary Association (KEWOPA) has reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to the full inclusion of women in political leadership, emphasizing that this is not a token gesture but a democratic and constitutional right. Under the stewardship of Chairperson Hon. Leah Sankaire, KEWOPA continues to champion the cause of women's empowerment in Kenya's political landscape.
Hon. Sankaire, who also serves as the Kajiado County Woman Representative, has been instrumental in steering KEWOPA's strategic initiatives. Her leadership has seen the launch of a visionary four-year strategic plan aimed at advancing women's roles in political leadership. The plan focuses on strengthening members' capacities in legislation, oversight, and representation, with objectives that include increasing women's presence in political leadership at national and county levels.
In addition to policy initiatives, Hon. Sankaire has led KEWOPA in addressing pressing social issues. The association recently launched the "Komesha Dhuluma" campaign, a nationwide initiative to combat femicide and other forms of gender-based violence. This campaign aims to address alarming statistics on gender-based violence and provide support to victims, with each female MP localizing the initiative through community sensitization and engagement forums tailored to their constituencies.
KEWOPA also calls upon male allies to actively endorse, mentor, and create opportunities for women in politics. This involves granting women access to strategic meetings, leadership roles, and providing them with the confidence to lead. The association underscores that visibility equates to power and is essential for effective leadership.
Recognizing that leadership extends beyond election, KEWOPA's recent discussions focused on supporting women to ascend to roles such as committee chairs, whips, and even Speaker positions. The association remains dedicated to capacity building in areas including legislation, communication, and public finance to empower women leaders.
KEWOPA commends Governor Kihika for her dedication to public service and her role as a trailblazer for women in leadership. Her ability to balance the responsibilities of governance with the joys and challenges of motherhood serves as an inspiration to many.
