Kitale town is undergoing a major transformation as the Trans Nzoia County Government, in partnership with environmental stakeholders and the local business community, rolled out a large-scale clean-up exercise aimed at improving sanitation, aesthetics, and public health in the town.
The initiative, held today, saw high turnout and active participation from county departments, municipal authorities, business owners, and residents. The effort was lauded by Dr. Roselyn Nasiebanda, the County’s Chief Officer for Lands, Physical Planning, Housing, and Urban Development, who flagged off the exercise at a well-attended event in the town center.
"Cleanliness is next to godliness," Dr. Nasiebanda declared, underscoring the spiritual, environmental, and economic value of a clean town. She urged residents, particularly business owners, to take full responsibility for the cleanliness of their surroundings and actively support the initiative moving forward.
Dr. Nasiebanda further announced that the County Government of Trans Nzoia will now designate the last Friday of every month as an official clean-up day for Kitale town. To institutionalize the process, different departments will be assigned specific zones to clean, working in collaboration with local businesses and civil society groups.
"I call on all stakeholders in Kitale town to purpose to ensure that Kitale always remains clean," she emphasized, noting that Governor George Natembeya and CEC for Lands, Phanice Khatundi, are fully behind the initiative as part of their broader vision for a clean, livable, and investment-friendly town.
Kitale Municipal Manager Irine Nang’ole echoed the sentiments, highlighting the ongoing efforts to position Kitale as the town of choice in the North Rift region. “We are working tirelessly to ensure Kitale remains attractive to residents, visitors, and investors alike,” she said.
As part of these efforts, numerous litter bins have been installed across the town to curb improper waste disposal. Nang’ole urged the public to utilize the bins and warned against vandalism. “We will take strict action against anyone caught vandalizing these bins. They are meant to serve the community,” she said, adding that business owners near the bins have a duty to help protect them.
Nang’ole also announced future beautification and hygiene initiatives that will enhance Kitale’s image, including the greening of open spaces and restoration of neglected areas.
Kitale Municipality Vice Chair Anne Waruguru revealed that new by-laws governing waste management will soon be implemented. Once enacted, individuals found littering will face legal penalties. “We want to instill a culture of accountability in how we handle waste. Cleanliness must be everyone’s responsibility,” she said.
Waruguru also disclosed plans to enhance security and cleanliness around strategic locations such as the iconic maize statue at the KCB roundabout and the CFG roundabout—areas that have recently drawn concern due to being used as informal shelters by street children. She emphasized that enforcement measures will be stepped up to ensure such public spaces remain clean and secure.
The coordinated efforts reflect a strong, shared vision among government agencies, private sector partners, and community members to elevate Kitale’s status as a clean, vibrant urban center.
“We are laying the foundation for a thriving Kitale,” Nang’ole concluded. “With commitment from all stakeholders, we can transform our town into a model of cleanliness and economic prosperity.”
Today’s clean-up exercise was attended by notable dignitaries, including Trans Nzoia County Human Resource Manager Director Imeldah Agoi, CPSB HR Johnstone Wanjala, Kitale Municipality Board members, the Marketing Manager of Khetias Supermarket, representatives from Equip Africa College, and various county officials.
As Kitale embarks on this journey of urban renewal, the message from the leadership is clear: a cleaner town means a healthier community, a stronger economy, and a brighter future for all.
