The Kenya National Qualifications Authority (KNQA) leadership today joined the Kisumu National Polytechnic in celebrating its 11th graduation ceremony — an event that also marked the institution's official registration as a Qualification Awarding Body (QAB) under the Kenya National Qualifications Framework (KNQF).
Leading the KNQA delegation were Council Chair Hon. Stanley Kiptis, Chief Executive Officer Dr. Alice Kande, and Director James Tegeret. Their presence underscored the Authority’s commitment to supporting institutions that meet the stringent quality standards set under the national framework.
Speaking during the ceremony, Dr. Kande lauded the Polytechnic’s achievement, noting that its inclusion in the KNQF as a QAB affirms its dedication to providing industry-relevant, competency-based education and training.
The event was further dignified by the presence of Dr. Meshack Opwora, Director of SDTVET, who represented the Cabinet Secretary for Education as the Guest of Honour. He commended the Polytechnic’s leadership for its visionary growth and contribution to the national skills development agenda.
In a groundbreaking development for Kenya and the continent at large, Dr. Alice Kande has been elected the President of the African Continental Qualifications Framework (ACQF) Network. Her election to this pivotal position reflects not only personal merit and leadership but also a growing recognition of Kenya’s influence in shaping education policy and qualifications frameworks across Africa.
The ACQF Network is a Pan-African platform designed to promote cooperation, comparability, and mutual recognition of qualifications among African countries. It plays a vital role in enhancing academic and professional mobility, strengthening quality assurance mechanisms, and supporting the African Union’s vision for an integrated and prosperous continent.
As President of the ACQF Network, Dr. Kande is expected to spearhead efforts in aligning national qualifications frameworks with continental and global best practices. Her leadership will be instrumental in fostering partnerships among member states, promoting lifelong learning, and ensuring that Africa’s workforce remains competitive and future-ready.
“This is not just a personal achievement, but a win for Kenya,” Dr. Kande said. “We now have a greater responsibility to lead from the front in developing and implementing qualifications that are inclusive, transparent, and transformative across Africa.”
Her appointment comes at a critical time when the African Union is intensifying its efforts to drive education reform and skills development as part of the Agenda 2063 blueprint.
This dual milestone — the elevation of a Kenyan leader to the continental stage, and the recognition of Kisumu National Polytechnic — is a proud moment for Kenya’s education sector and signals a new chapter of excellence, collaboration, and regional leadership.
