KTDA Power Company Reports 32% Surge in Electricity Production, Benefiting Smallholder Tea Farmers

KTDA Power Company Limited, a subsidiary of the Kenya Tea Development Agency (KTDA), has announced a remarkable 32% increase in electricity production from its operational hydropower projects. The surge in power generation is attributed to the recent heavy rains, which have significantly boosted river flow and, in turn, the output of the company’s hydropower plants.

In February 2025, the six fully operational hydro-power plants—located at Imenti, Lower Nyamindi, Gura, North Mathioya, Chania, and Nyambunde—generated a total of 3.28 MKWhrs of electricity. The following month, March 2025, the plants generated 4.33 MKWhrs, marking a notable increase in power production. This rise in electricity supply is having a direct positive impact on the 17 tea factories that rely on KTDA Power for their energy needs.

The increased electricity supply is translating to reduced operational costs for these tea factories, enabling them to process tea more efficiently. The result is a higher price paid to smallholder farmers for their produce, enhancing the livelihoods of Kenya's tea farming communities. KTDA Power’s hydropower plants provide affordable, reliable, and renewable energy to the factories, making a significant contribution to the economic stability of the region.

The company is also continuing its investment in expanding the capacity of its energy infrastructure. Construction is underway on additional hydropower projects at South Mara, Iraru, Rupingazi, Kipsonoi, and Chemosit. Additionally, KTDA Power is in the feasibility study and tendering phase for even more projects, including the Kathita, Kiringa, Ragati, Gatamaiyu, Nyamasege, Taunet, and Kapolet hydro plants. These future projects aim to further strengthen the region’s energy independence and support the sustainability of the tea farming sector.

Peter Wachira, the General Manager of KTDA Power Company, emphasized the importance of these projects in fostering economic development. "The benefits of reliable, renewable, clean, affordable, and sustainable energy are evident, and works are ongoing for other small hydro projects. We are determined to ensure they are completed and fully operational," said Wachira.

KTDA Power Company's commitment to expanding small hydropower generation demonstrates the potential of these renewable energy sources to drive both environmental and economic growth. By leveraging Kenya's natural resources, the company is creating a foundation for sustainable development and improving the lives of rural communities dependent on tea farming.
