There is no legitimacy that can be claimed by an administration that attacks its children, and no voice has echoed this truth more loudly than that of Faith Odhiambo, the President of the Law Society of Kenya (LSK). As the country grapples with a series of incidents where children have been subjected to violence by the police, Odhiambo has stepped forward, demanding accountability for these acts of brutality.
Children are the most vulnerable members of society, and every decision made by the government should be in their best interest. Yet, under the current state of affairs, these young Kenyans have become victims of unchecked state overreach and police impunity. The LSK President has not minced words in her condemnation of the Kenya Police Service’s actions, particularly in the brutalization of children simply for engaging in extra-curricular activities — spaces that have historically nurtured some of the country’s best talents.
Kenya is a nation known for its resilience. The people of this country have shown great patience, enduring hardship, tolerating injustice, and at times, accepting actions they should not. However, one thing that no Kenyan can tolerate is the maiming and mistreatment of children who are simply trying to participate in youth activities that are part of their right to grow, learn, and flourish. The fields and courts where our children play and compete should be nurturing spaces, not zones of fear and violence.
Faith Odhiambo has been at the forefront of demanding justice for these victims. With a steady and unwavering voice, she has called on the leadership of the Kenya Police Service to be held accountable for what she refers to as an "insanity" that is not only unjust but deeply concerning. The LSK President insists that the brutality must not go unchallenged and that the time for accountability is long overdue.
In her statements, Odhiambo highlights that this is not just a case of violence against a few individuals; it is an attack on the future of Kenya itself. Children are the nation's future, and they deserve a safe environment where they can develop their talents and pursue their interests without fear of being harmed by those who are supposed to protect them.
As Kenya continues to face this growing crisis, Faith Odhiambo’s leadership and voice have become a beacon for justice and reform. She has made it clear that the protection of children must be a priority, and the police, who are supposed to safeguard the public, must answer for their transgressions. The actions of the police force cannot be ignored, and the leadership must be held to account for the violence carried out against the most vulnerable in society.
Faith Odhiambo’s call for justice is not just a plea for the children of today, but for the Kenya of tomorrow. It is a plea for the values that should define this nation — a nation where the safety and well-being of children come first, and where those in positions of power are held to the highest standards of accountability.
