LSK President Faith Odhiambo Leads the Bar in Eulogizing Legal Luminary Pheroze Nowrojee

By John Kariuki

In the wake of the demise of Senior Counsel Pheroze Nowrojee, Law Society of Kenya (LSK) President Faith Odhiambo has emerged as the principal voice articulating the profound sense of bereavement reverberating across the legal fraternity. Her tribute, both solemn and incisive, captured not only the magnitude of the loss but also the enduring jurisprudential legacy left in Nowrojee’s wake.

Odhiambo, herself a custodian of legal ethics and the rule of law, lamented the passing of a man she described as the apotheosis of legal probity and intellectual rectitude. In her capacity as President of the Bar, she encapsulated the collective grief of advocates, jurists, and judicial officers across the nation, acknowledging that the death of Nowrojee represents the extinguishing of a rare jurisprudential light.

Described as a doyen of constitutionalism and a steadfast defender of civil liberties, Pheroze Nowrojee was revered for his forensic brilliance and his unwavering fidelity to justice. His career, which spanned several decades, was characterized by an unassailable commitment to due process, a mastery of legal hermeneutics, and an advocacy style marked by both eloquence and restraint.

Odhiambo emphasized that Nowrojee was not merely a practitioner of law, but an architect of legal thought — a jurist whose contributions to Kenyan jurisprudence will continue to animate courtrooms and classrooms alike. His pleadings, opinions, and written works form part of the intellectual substratum upon which contemporary legal practice is grounded.

Yet beyond the courtroom, Odhiambo portrayed Nowrojee as a paragon of collegiality — a legal statesman whose mentorship was dispensed with magnanimity and grace. His character, she observed, was as profound as his intellect; his integrity as immovable as his convictions.

“The void he leaves within the legal profession is cavernous,” Odhiambo noted, “yet his legacy endures — not merely in precedents cited or judgments remembered, but in the ethical compass he provided for generations of practitioners.”

Under Odhiambo’s stewardship, the Law Society has pledged to uphold the ideals espoused by Nowrojee — intellectual rigor, ethical advocacy, and the unrelenting pursuit of justice. Her tribute was not merely a eulogy, but a reaffirmation of professional values that must outlive even the most eminent among us.

As the bar mourns the departure of one of its most illustrious members, Faith Odhiambo’s words serve as both elegy and exhortation — a solemn farewell to a legal titan, and a call to the fraternity to strive toward the lofty standards he so effortlessly embodied.

In his absence, the bench and bar must now assume the mantle of his legacy — to preserve, promote, and perpetuate the high ideals of legal practice that Pheroze Nowrojee so valiantly championed.

May Senior Counsel rest in eternal peace, and may his indelible legacy continue to illumine the path of justice.
