Male MPs Commit to Advancing Gender Equality in Leadership

In a landmark show of support for gender equality, male Members of Parliament under the Kenya Young Parliamentarians Association (KYPA) have committed to championing the empowerment of women in leadership roles.

The commitment was made during a high-level retreat held in Naivasha, Nakuru County, organized by the Kenya Women Parliamentary Association (KEWOPA) in partnership with the Institute of Public Finance (IPF), as part of the Strengthening Parliamentary Leadership for Improved Health and Gender Outcomes (SPALTA) program.

Speaking at the event, KYPA Chairperson Hon. John Mukunji (Manyatta) emphasized the vital role men in leadership must play in promoting gender equity.

“Men in leadership must support the advancement of women into positions of influence,” said Hon. Mukunji. “We believe women are capable leaders, and it is our responsibility to mentor and support them.”

The retreat brought together male and female lawmakers to engage in open dialogue, share experiences, and build strategies aimed at increasing the participation of women in political and leadership spaces.

“We urge male leaders to not only voice their support but to take action by mentoring and creating opportunities for women,” Hon. Mukunji added. “Political parties must also adopt strategies to increase women’s participation in politics.”

Participants engaged in interactive sessions focused on practical steps that Parliamentarians can implement to promote gender equality, such as mentoring women leaders, advocating for inclusive policies, and challenging structural barriers within political parties.

The initiative marks a significant step towards inclusive governance in Kenya, with male MPs now publicly aligning themselves with efforts to foster a more gender-balanced political landscape.

The SPALTA program continues to provide a platform for capacity-building and collaboration, with the ultimate goal of achieving stronger leadership and improved health and gender outcomes nationwide.
