Residents of Amagoro in Teso North Sub-County who had suffered chicken losses breathed a sigh of relief when they conered a mangoose, which they vented their anger on, killing it instantly.
The only known snake killer in the world, a part of human beings who use sticks to kill them, Mangesse are dangerous when they pounce on chicken.
An Amagoro resident, Simon Otwane, said the mangoose had terrorised the area for a long time, killing their chicken with impunity.
" These animals which terrorised our area have made us spend Christmas holidays without slaughtering chicken; which is a common recipe for such fabulous occasions.
" I am happy we have managed to corner this carnivorous mammal, which has pestered us for a long time with no solution in sight," Otwane said.
A mongoose is a small terrestrial carnivorous mammal belonging to the Herpestidae family. This family has two subfamilies, the Herpestinae and the Mungotinae. The Herpestinae comprises 23 living species that are native to southern Europe, Africa, and Asia, whereas the Mungotinae comprises 11 species native to Africa.
Mongooses are known for their lightning-fast speed and fearless nature, making them a formidable adversary for snakes.
Their encounters often end in favour of the mongoose, leaving snakes wary and cautious when faced with these determined and relentless hunters.
Cases of snake bites in Amagoro had reduced, thanks to the invasion of this carnivorous mammal belonging to the family of hepstidae.
