Elgeyo Marakwet Governor Wisely Rotich has issued a passionate appeal to residents and national authorities to take firm action against the betting site Aviator, describing it as a predatory platform that is devastating lives and draining the country’s economy.

In a strongly worded statement delivered during the Easter season, Governor Rotich condemned the online betting game as a “pure heist,” accusing the site of exploiting vulnerable Kenyans by promising easy money while siphoning billions out of the local economy.

“Aviator is a computer-programmed betting site that takes 100% from clients and returns just 5% to a select few — making a staggering 95% profit,” said Governor Rotich. “This is not just unethical; it is criminal.”

The governor warned that since Aviator is operated by an international company, the money lost through the platform exits the Kenyan economy, reducing liquidity and weakening national financial stability.

“Every shilling wagered is hard-earned cash that ends up enriching someone sipping coffee in a five-star hotel in the Western world,” he added.

Beyond the economic impact, Governor Rotich highlighted the serious social toll the betting craze is taking on families and communities, including cases of addiction, debt, depression, and even suicide.

“We have lost too many innocent lives to this,” he said. “The anguish it causes to families, children, and society at large is immeasurable.”

Calling for immediate intervention, the governor urged EMC residents to abandon the platform and seek help at Iten County Referral Hospital, where addiction counselors and the mental wellness team are available to offer support. He encouraged the public to treat the Easter season as a turning point for healthier, more productive lifestyles.

“Let this Easter be a new beginning. Say no to dangerous betting practices and reclaim your future,” he urged.

Governor Rotich joined the growing list of leaders calling for a complete ban on Aviator in Kenya, proposing that access to the site be blocked and its integration with local payment systems disabled.

His remarks come amid rising national concern over the effects of digital gambling, with calls for stricter regulation and public education on the risks associated with online betting platforms.
