The Woman Representative for Mombasa County, Hon. Zamzam Mohamed, has formally requested a Statement from the Chairperson of the Departmental Committee on Administration and Internal Security following the tragic death of Mr. Yusuf Ali Abdi in a recent building collapse in Mombasa.
In her request tabled in Parliament, Hon. Zamzam raised concerns over the circumstances leading to the death of Mr. Abdi, who was reportedly trapped inside a structure that had been marked for demolition by the County Government of Mombasa.
According to Hon. Zamzam, the County Government announced on April 8, 2025, that a controlled demolition would be conducted on a compromised building located on plot No. XLVI/195/MI in Mombasa, following its partial collapse. The following day, a multi-agency operation led by the Kenya Defence Forces was deployed to carry out the demolition, under the authority of a Gazette Notice issued on April 7.
However, tragedy struck when Mr. Yusuf Ali Abdi was found dead amidst the rubble, sparking public outcry and demands for accountability.
“It is deeply concerning that a life was lost during what was supposed to be a carefully coordinated and controlled demolition,” said Hon. Zamzam. “We need answers. We need justice for Mr. Abdi and closure for his family.”
In her Statement request, the legislator called for:
- A comprehensive report on the measures being taken by the government to support the bereaved family of the late Mr. Yusuf Ali Abdi.
- A status update on investigations into the circumstances surrounding the building’s collapse and the events that led to Mr. Abdi’s death.
The incident has raised broader questions about safety protocols, communication lapses, and the responsibility of both county and national authorities in managing high-risk demolitions. Residents and human rights groups in Mombasa have also joined the call for transparency and justice.
Hon. Zamzam emphasized the need for urgent reforms to prevent future tragedies, especially in urban areas where poorly constructed buildings pose growing threats. “This is not just about Yusuf Abdi — it is about ensuring no other Kenyan has to die in such a tragic and avoidable manner,” she said.
The Departmental Committee is expected to respond in the coming days as investigations continue.
