MPs Sudi and Barasa Hit Out at Former President Kenyatta Over Gen Z Remarks

Kapseret Member of Parliament Oscar Sudi and his Kimilili counterpart Didmus Barasa have launched a sharp critique of former President Uhuru Kenyatta following his recent remarks on Kenya's Generation Z. The two lawmakers, speaking at a fundraising event at ACK Tumaini Church in Kapseret on Sunday, took issue with Kenyatta’s comments and his criticism of the current government, led by President William Ruto.

Sudi and Barasa’s criticisms were particularly pointed, with Sudi accusing Kenyatta of leaving a heavy financial burden for President Ruto when he handed over power.

“Uhuru, you talk a lot about bashing the government, but let’s not forget that you left behind huge loans. The country is now saddled with debts that will take us decades to repay. You left only $1 million when you left office, and it’s now up to the current administration to figure out how to pay it off over the next 40 years,” Sudi said.

In a strongly worded rebuke, Sudi reminded Kenyatta that despite the challenges the country faced, President Ruto had shown the former president respect and had taken on the tough task of managing the nation’s economy.

“I didn’t want to respond to you, but since you’ve been rude and started inciting the youth against the government, I urge you to stop. Let President Ruto do his job without you meddling,” Sudi added.

Sudi, speaking candidly, also pointed out that Kenyatta had failed to create enough jobs for the youth during his time in office. He said it was now time for the former president to step back and allow Ruto the space to manage the country's economic recovery.

“I ask you, Uhuru, kindly leave President Ruto alone. He is doing his best to revive the economy of this country, and the youth deserve a chance to thrive,” Sudi said.

Echoing similar sentiments, Kimilili MP Didmus Barasa expressed concern that Kenyatta’s words were starting to sow division and distract from the government's core objectives. He stated that while political leaders may have differences, the focus should remain on the betterment of the country.

“A lot of noise has been coming from certain quarters, and we cannot let it distract us,” Barasa said. “Former President Uhuru Kenyatta is trying to incite the youth, acting as though he cares for them more than their parents do. But when he was president, he had the chance to create opportunities for the youth.”

Barasa further pointed out that during Kenyatta’s tenure, opportunities for young people were limited, citing the appointment of 91-year-old Moody Awori as the chairperson of the sports fund.

“When the youth spoke out against it, they were dismissed as thieves, corrupt, or untrustworthy. That was wrong,” Barasa said.

The two MPs then advised Kenyatta to refrain from further criticism and focus on more productive endeavors, rather than pointing fingers at the current leadership. Barasa said Kenyatta’s recent remarks lacked honesty and were not in the best interest of the country.

This exchange comes in the wake of a speech by former President Kenyatta during the Leadership Summit in Kampala, Uganda, on April 25, 2025, where he urged young people to stand up for good governance and avoid being swayed by short-term political gains.

As the political tension continues to simmer, the question remains whether former President Kenyatta will respond to the criticism from his former allies or whether this will spark further divisions within the political landscape.

For now, both MPs Sudi and Barasa are calling for a united front, with a focus on delivering real solutions to the economic challenges that the nation faces. The future of Kenya’s leadership, they argue, should be about cooperation, not confrontation.
