MSEA Nyamira Partners with Hand in Hand to Boost Banana Value Addition and Sustainability

The Micro and Small Enterprises Authority (MSEA) Nyamira office, in collaboration with Hand in Hand, held a strategic meeting with the Wefahson Banana Cooperative to explore opportunities for enhancing banana value addition through a circular economy framework.

The meeting aimed at strengthening the banana value chain focused on several key initiatives designed to support the long-term growth of small enterprises. MSEA representatives highlighted their commitment to promoting and developing micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSEs) across Kenya. Key programs discussed included the NYOTA program, the KJET initiative, and efforts to formalize associations and groups, which aim to build capacity, increase access to resources, and promote sustainable growth for small businesses.

In addition to discussing these support programs, the meeting emphasized the importance of improving market access and financing for value-added agribusinesses. The collaboration with Hand in Hand also includes providing entrepreneurship training, mentorship, and facilitating market linkages to ensure the cooperative’s members are well-equipped to succeed in a competitive marketplace.

A critical focus of the discussions was the promotion of waste utilization, with proposals to convert banana residues into organic fertilizers and to adopt eco-friendly packaging solutions. These initiatives are aligned with broader environmental sustainability goals, not only reducing waste but also providing cooperative members with opportunities to generate additional income streams.

As part of the action plan, participants agreed to conduct a comprehensive needs assessment, explore potential funding opportunities, and roll out targeted business training for cooperative members. The meeting concluded with the identification of key steps to move forward, and a follow-up meeting has been scheduled to review progress and refine the implementation plan.

This collaboration between MSEA Nyamira and Hand in Hand represents a significant step toward boosting the banana value addition sector, promoting sustainable practices, and creating new business opportunities for small-scale farmers and entrepreneurs in the region.
