Mumias East Sub-County today became the fifth area to benefit from Governor Fernandes Barasa’s ongoing initiative aimed at boosting agriculture and food security in Kakamega County. In a remarkable move to empower vulnerable farmers, Governor Barasa distributed free fertiliser and maize seeds to targeted groups, including widows, persons with disabilities, women, and low-income families.
Speaking during the distribution event, Governor Barasa emphasized that the initiative was part of his broader efforts to increase maize production across the county, with the goal of enhancing food supply and improving livelihoods. The free farm inputs are intended to provide farmers with the essential tools needed to cultivate maize more effectively, leading to higher yields and better income.
“This program is designed to ensure that even the most vulnerable members of our society, including widows, persons with disabilities, women, and those from low-income households, have access to the resources they need to thrive in farming,” Governor Barasa said. “By providing the right inputs, we are helping farmers increase their productivity, take care of their families, and contribute to the overall socio-economic development of Kakamega County.”
The program is part of Governor Barasa’s broader strategy to enhance food security in the region while uplifting the living standards of Kakamega residents. Through this initiative, the county government aims to not only improve the agricultural output of small-scale farmers but also create sustainable income opportunities for the people of Kakamega.
The event was attended by several Members of the County Assembly (MCAs), led by the host MCA, Francis Washika, alongside key county executives, including the County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Agriculture, Mophat Mandela.
“We are grateful for this initiative, which is truly a game-changer for the farmers of Mumias East and the larger Kakamega County,” said MCA Washika. “With the support of Governor Barasa, we are confident that our farmers will achieve greater success and improve their quality of life.”
Governor Barasa’s initiative reflects his continued commitment to transforming Kakamega County into a hub of agricultural excellence, ensuring that every farmer, regardless of their socio-economic status, has the support they need to succeed.
As the program rolls out across other sub-counties, it is expected to have a significant impact on food production, poverty alleviation, and the overall well-being of Kakamega’s farming communities.
