In a groundbreaking move to improve healthcare access for students, the County Government of Nandi has officially launched a mass registration drive for learners under the Taifa Care program. This initiative, a crucial step toward achieving Universal Health Coverage (UHC) for all students, is being carried out in collaboration with the Ministry of Education and the County Department of Health. The program aims to ensure that every learner, regardless of their school’s affiliation, has access to comprehensive medical coverage.
The registration exercise is being facilitated by community health promoters, who are helping parents and guardians enroll eligible learners. This drive is part of Kenya’s broader UHC agenda, which is administered by the Social Health Authority (SHA), ensuring that all students in Nandi, including those in private institutions, benefit from essential healthcare services.
Moses Kuria, Senior Economic Advisor to the President, emphasized the significance of the program during a meeting with healthcare stakeholders. He urged parents to ensure that their children have the necessary documents for registration, highlighting the importance of the initiative in securing a healthier future for Kenya's young people.
“This initiative is crucial for securing a healthier future for Kenya’s learners,” said Kuria. “By ensuring that every student has access to healthcare, we are investing in their well-being and enabling them to focus on their studies without health-related disruptions.”
The registration drive has received strong support from Nandi County officials, who have been actively overseeing the exercise at various primary schools across the county. Deputy County Secretary Dr. Lydia Kosgei, Health and Sanitation CEC Member Dr. Angeline Kirui, Culture, Gender, and Social Welfare CEC Member Scolastica Tuwei, and Chief Officer for Health and Sanitation Fredrick Kiptum were present to monitor the registration process at Tegat, Township, and Kamobo Primary Schools.
Dr. Kirui reiterated the county's commitment to ensuring that no child is left behind in accessing healthcare. "By enrolling our learners in Taifa Care, we are not only safeguarding their health but also fostering a more productive and supportive learning environment," Dr. Kirui stated.
The Taifa Care program offers extensive medical coverage, which includes a range of healthcare services that reduce the financial burden on families and help ensure students can continue their education without health-related interruptions. The program is designed to make healthcare more accessible and affordable for all students, empowering them to thrive academically and physically.
