Ndindi Nyoro Calls for Monthly Stipend for Village Elders in National Budget

Kiharu Member of Parliament Ndindi Nyoro has urged the Ministry of Interior and National Administration to adjust its budget estimates—set to be tabled in Parliament today—to include a monthly stipend for village elders across the country.

Speaking ahead of the parliamentary session, Nyoro emphasized the need to formally recognize the over 45,000 village elders who have been voluntarily supporting local administration and grassroots security for years.

“In our country, security and administration start at the village level. Village elders are the first point of contact and are vital in maintaining order and assisting Chiefs and Assistant Chiefs,” said Nyoro.

He proposed that beginning in the next financial year, the government sets aside funds to pay each village elder a monthly stipend of no less than KSh 8,000, adding that such recognition is long overdue.

“These men and women have been working tirelessly without pay. It is time we rise to the occasion and give them the respect and reward they deserve. This move will not only motivate them but also strengthen local security networks,” he added.

Nyoro praised the village elders for their dedication and called on the Ministry and fellow legislators to support the proposal, noting that formalizing their roles through financial compensation will enhance community stability and boost national unity.

“I will personally follow up to ensure this proposal is captured in the budget and implemented,” he affirmed.

If approved, the initiative would mark a historic milestone in the recognition of grassroots governance and provide structured support to an essential group that has long served behind the scenes.
