Oboch Primary School in Siaya County is set to witness a transformation, thanks to a KES 35 million infrastructure upgrade funded by the M-Pesa Foundation. The project, part of the Foundation’s “Citizens of the Future” initiative, aims to improve learning environments across the country, with a particular focus on schools in dire need of infrastructure support.
The upgrade includes the construction of nine new classrooms for grade school students and three additional classrooms for Early Childhood Development Education (ECDE) learners. This expansion is expected to alleviate overcrowding and provide students with a more comfortable, conducive space for learning. In addition, the school has received a fully equipped 40-seater ICT laboratory, which will support digital learning and provide valuable technological skills to the students and the broader community.
Mr. John Ohaga, Trustee of M-Pesa Foundation, emphasized the importance of investing in educational infrastructure. "At M-Pesa Foundation, we believe that every student deserves to learn in a safe and conducive environment. We are committed to continuously investing in spaces that encourage students to reach their full academic potential. Education has the power to unlock opportunities for communities and improve livelihoods, regardless of background," said Ohaga.
In addition to the classrooms and ICT lab, the M-Pesa Foundation has also constructed new ablution blocks for boys, girls, and staff members, improving hygiene standards at the school. A new kitchen, equipped with two energy-efficient jikos, has also been set up to cater to the nutritional needs of the students.
Mrs. Perez Molo, the Head of Oboch Primary School, expressed gratitude for the support and highlighted the positive impact of the renovations. "We are honored to have been selected for this renovation. The new classrooms and facilities have transformed our school. Our students can now focus, dream big, and thrive academically," she said.
This renovation at Oboch Primary School is part of a larger initiative by the M-Pesa Foundation to improve education infrastructure across Kenya. In November 2024, a similar project was completed at Kametho Primary School in Siaya County, where KES 35 million was invested in constructing and upgrading the school’s infrastructure. Other counties benefiting from these initiatives include Migori, Homa Bay, Meru, Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo Marakwet, Muranga, Kisii, Bungoma, and Vihiga.
As the M-Pesa Foundation continues to roll out these impactful projects, it remains committed to creating lasting change in Kenya's education sector, ensuring that every child has access to quality learning environments.
