The National Assembly Sports Committee has expressed serious concerns over the ongoing construction of the Masinde Muliro Stadium in Kanduyi, citing structural issues and the risk of substandard work.
During an inspection tour in Bungoma Town, the committee’s chairperson and Webuye West MP, Dan Wanyama, pointed out visible cracks on the stadium’s walls, raising red flags about the quality of the construction, even as the project progresses toward its final phase.
The stadium, which is being renovated at a cost of KSh 800 million, is expected to be completed by May 2025. However, the committee has cautioned the contractor to address the emerging issues urgently and ensure that both the timeline and construction standards are met.
“We are not satisfied with what we have seen. Cracks at this stage are a sign of poor workmanship, and we will not allow public funds to go to waste,” said Wanyama. “The contractor has already been put on notice and must rectify the issues to deliver a facility that meets national standards.”
Wanyama stressed the committee’s commitment to safeguarding taxpayers’ money and ensuring that the stadium, once completed, will serve as a lasting asset for sports development in Bungoma County and beyond.
The inspection comes amid growing scrutiny of large-scale public infrastructure projects, particularly in the sports sector, where quality and timely delivery remain a challenge in many counties.
The committee has vowed to keep a close eye on the progress and to hold all responsible parties accountable should the project fall short of expectations.
