In a significant breakthrough in the fight against highway crime, police officers from Voi Police Station have successfully arrested three notorious highway robbers who have been on the run for an extended period. The suspects, identified as Joseph Macharia Mwangi (40), Peter Muchemi Maina (36), and Agnes Malemba Mshenga (32), were apprehended after a well-coordinated and thorough surveillance operation along the Mombasa-Nairobi highway.
The trio was intercepted at Vacani Resort while traveling in a white Subaru Legacy, bearing the license plate KCJ 842Z. A routine inspection of the vehicle led to the discovery of three sets of reflective number plates: KCR 879U, KCA 583L, and KAZ 946L. This finding further raised suspicions, indicating that the vehicle had been used in multiple criminal activities under different identities.
The suspects, who have been linked to a series of highway robberies and carjackings across the region, are believed to have been involved in numerous incidents where unsuspecting travelers were targeted. The police’s swift action and intelligence-led operation have brought a significant reduction in the threat posed by these criminals, offering much-needed relief to the public.
“This operation is a testament to the professionalism and dedication of our officers, who have been working tirelessly to ensure the safety of travelers along our highways,” said the Voi Police Station commander during the arrest. “The recovery of multiple sets of number plates further demonstrates the level of sophistication these criminals employed in their illegal activities. We will continue to pursue all those involved in such crimes and ensure they face the full force of the law.”
The arrested individuals are currently in police custody and are set to face a range of charges, including armed robbery, possession of stolen property, and using fraudulent number plates. Investigations are ongoing, with law enforcement authorities working to identify additional victims and determine whether the suspects have connections to other criminal networks.
The successful operation has been hailed as a major win in the fight against highway crime, and the police have pledged to continue enhancing surveillance efforts and collaboration with local communities to curb criminal activities. Motorists and travelers are encouraged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the authorities to aid in the continued fight against crime on Kenyan roads.
