Speaking during an inspection tour of the ongoing construction of a KSh112 million modern market in Chogoria town, Maara Constituency, the President underscored the importance of agriculture as a cornerstone of Kenya’s economy and livelihoods.
“Agriculture pays,” said President Ruto. “That is why we are deliberate in creating conducive environments where our farmers and traders can operate with dignity, safety, and efficiency. This market is a promise fulfilled and a step forward in empowering our people.”
The Chogoria market, funded through a partnership between the national government and development partners, is set to serve thousands of traders from Tharaka Nithi County and beyond. Once complete, the market will feature modern stalls, cold storage facilities, proper drainage, and sanitation systems aimed at boosting hygiene standards and promoting agribusiness.
President Ruto also took the opportunity to address local residents, outlining several government initiatives tailored to uplift rural economies and enhance agricultural productivity. These include affordable credit for farmers, increased access to quality seeds and fertilizers, and investments in irrigation and mechanization.
“Our goal is to move from subsistence to commercial agriculture. We are equipping our farmers not just to feed their families but to feed the nation and earn decent livelihoods,” he told the gathered wananchi.
The Head of State lauded the local leadership and community for their support and called for unity in driving development.
He concluded by urging traders to prepare to take full advantage of the new facility once completed and assured them of continued government support to improve market access and value addition.
The Chogoria market is expected to be completed later this year and will stand as one of the most modern trading hubs in the region.
