President William Ruto has suspended Dr. Shwarup Mishra from his position as Chair of the Kenya Biovax Institute with immediate effect, following allegations of unethical practices linked to kidney transplant procedures at Mediheal Hospital, where he is the founder.
In a statement issued by State House on Thursday, President Ruto emphasized the government's commitment to upholding integrity and accountability within public institutions, particularly in the healthcare sector. The suspension comes amid mounting concerns over reports of malpractice and unethical conduct involving organ transplants at Mediheal Hospital, one of Kenya’s largest private healthcare facilities.
"President Ruto has today suspended Dr. Shwarup Mishra as Chairperson of the Kenya Biovax Institute pending the conclusion of investigations into alleged unethical activities concerning kidney transplant operations at Mediheal Hospital," the statement read in part.
Dr. Mishra, a former Member of Parliament and a prominent medical professional, has been at the center of a growing controversy after allegations surfaced suggesting potential violations of medical ethics, including concerns over consent and donor sourcing in transplant procedures.
The Ministry of Health and the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council (KMPDC) have launched parallel investigations into the matter. Authorities are expected to determine whether any laws were broken and if disciplinary action should be taken against those found culpable.
The Kenya Biovax Institute, a state-backed pharmaceutical manufacturing agency, has played a critical role in Kenya’s efforts to bolster local vaccine production and reduce dependency on foreign imports. Dr. Mishra’s suspension throws a spotlight on the need for stringent oversight of public sector appointments, particularly in sensitive sectors like healthcare.
