President William Ruto has arrived in Rome, Italy, to attend the state funeral of His Holiness Pope Francis, joining a host of global leaders, dignitaries, and millions of Catholic faithful in mourning the passing of the beloved pontiff.
The late Pope Francis, born Jorge Mario Bergoglio, passed away earlier this week, prompting an outpouring of grief across religious and political lines. As the first pope from the Global South and a tireless advocate for the poor, justice, and interfaith dialogue, his legacy has left a lasting mark on the world.
Speaking upon his arrival, President Ruto expressed Kenya’s deep condolences and praised Pope Francis as “a towering moral voice of our generation.”
“Pope Francis inspired the world with his humility, compassion, and unwavering commitment to the dignity of every human being,” President Ruto said. “He reminded us that faith must translate into service, and that true leadership is measured in love for the least among us.”
The Kenyan Head of State is among several African leaders attending the funeral, reflecting the strong ties Pope Francis cultivated with the continent during his papacy. His historic 2015 visit to Africa, which included a stop in Nairobi, remains etched in the memories of many Kenyans.
“Kenya joins the global Catholic community and all people of goodwill in mourning a shepherd who walked with the people,” Ruto added. “As we celebrate his life, we also commit to the values he championed—peace, inclusivity, and care for creation.”
President Ruto will attend the solemn funeral Mass at St. Peter’s Basilica, alongside heads of state, religious leaders, and representatives from various faith traditions. He is also expected to hold bilateral talks with other global leaders on the sidelines of the ceremony.
Pope Francis leaves behind a remarkable legacy that transcended doctrine, reaching the hearts of believers and non-believers alike. His call for a Church that is "bruised, hurting and dirty because it has been out on the streets" continues to resonate with reformers, youth, and leaders worldwide.
