President William Ruto today reaffirmed his government's commitment to empowering farmers and boosting local economies, as he launched a series of development initiatives in Meru County. The President's visit to Igembe South marks a significant step in the fight against exploitation in the miraa (khat) business, a major economic driver in the region.
In a bid to eliminate cartels that have been exploiting farmers, President Ruto announced plans to reform the miraa industry, ensuring that farmers can access better markets and earn fair prices for their produce. The initiative, he emphasized, will unlock the full potential of the crop and help generate wealth for thousands of farmers across the region.
"We are determined to create a sustainable and fair environment for miraa farmers, removing the barriers that have long held them back from enjoying the full benefits of their hard work," President Ruto stated. "Through our continued efforts to broaden market access, we will ensure that more farmers prosper and contribute to the growth of the local and national economy."
Later, the President launched a major infrastructure project that will serve over 13,000 people in Maua town with the unveiling of the Maua Sewerage Line. This project is expected to improve sanitation and enhance the quality of life for residents, ensuring that Maua continues to thrive as a key economic hub in Meru County.
"The Maua Sewerage Line is a vital step in ensuring that our towns remain clean, healthy, and conducive to business growth. With the support of the national government, we will continue investing in the infrastructure that communities need to succeed," the President added.
President Ruto also laid the foundation stone for the Maua Modern Market, a new facility designed to support local traders and provide a more organized and accessible marketplace. The market will serve as a major boost to commerce in the area, offering traders improved infrastructure and better opportunities to reach customers.
"Supporting our traders is essential to building a vibrant economy. The Maua Modern Market will empower local entrepreneurs, provide employment, and help the region attract more investments," President Ruto said while addressing the traders and wananchi present at the event.
The President's visit to Meru County highlights his administration's focus on uplifting local economies, promoting fair trade, and improving infrastructure. With these initiatives, the government aims to create a conducive environment for businesses to thrive, enhance living standards, and ensure that all Kenyans benefit from national progress.
As part of his ongoing commitment to empowering rural communities, President Ruto concluded his remarks by calling on all stakeholders to work together for the greater good of the nation. "Our strength lies in unity and collective effort. Together, we will build a prosperous and equitable future for all Kenyans."
