Senate Labour Committee Sets Key Priorities Amid Legislative Milestone

The Senate Committee on Labour and Social Welfare, chaired by Senator Crystal Asige, has outlined its key priorities following a meeting to review its work schedule. The Committee celebrated a significant legislative achievement with the recent passage of the Persons with Disabilities Bill (Senate Bills No. 7 of 2023), which was approved with amendments from the National Assembly. The Senate formally adopted the amendments yesterday, marking a notable step in advancing disability rights in Kenya.

Senator Asige, who sponsored the Bill alongside National Assembly Majority Leader Hon. Kimani Ichung’wah, commended the Committee for its efforts in ensuring the legislation’s success. The Bill aims to enhance protections for persons with disabilities by restructuring the National Council for Persons with Disabilities and creating a comprehensive framework for monitoring rights, providing incentives, and offering reliefs.

“This is a historic achievement for the disability community in Kenya,” said Senator Asige. “The passage of this Bill lays the groundwork for a more inclusive society, where the rights of persons with disabilities are recognized and safeguarded.”

In addition to the legislative success, the Committee discussed its ongoing work on several critical issues. Among its recent accomplishments, the Committee successfully resolved the case of Mr. Daniel Karanja, a former employee of Nduti Tea Factory, securing his terminal dues.

Looking forward, the Committee outlined several key priorities, including the resolution of outstanding petitions related to terminal benefits for former Kenya Cooperative Creameries (KCC) workers, the winding up of the Technical University of Kenya’s retirement benefits scheme, and compensation disputes involving major firms such as Kenya Breweries Limited (KBL), Kaplan & Stratton Advocates, and Harrison Kinyanjui Advocates.

The Committee also emphasized the importance of tightening oversight of labour migration, especially in addressing the growing problem of fraudulent recruitment agencies that exploit job seekers seeking employment opportunities abroad.

Senator Asige reiterated the Committee’s commitment to ensuring fair treatment for all workers and resolving disputes promptly. "We must remain vigilant against exploitative practices, particularly in the international labour market, and work towards creating a safer environment for Kenyans seeking opportunities abroad," she said.

The Senate Committee on Labour and Social Welfare continues to play a crucial role in advocating for workers' rights, addressing long-standing issues in the employment sector, and fostering a fairer and more inclusive labour environment in Kenya.
