Speaker of the National Assembly, Moses Wetangula, held a significant engagement this morning with His Excellency Olusegun Obasanjo, former President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, who is currently playing a key role in the ongoing peace process between the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and the Republic of Rwanda.
President Obasanjo, who serves alongside prominent African leaders such as former Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta, South Africa’s Kgalema Motlanthe, Ethiopia’s Sahle-Work Zewde, and the Central African Republic’s Catherine Samba-Panza, has been instrumental in facilitating dialogue in one of Africa's most critical peace negotiations.
During their discussion, Speaker Wetangula commended President Obasanjo for his continuous efforts and unwavering commitment to peace and stability in the Great Lakes region. Obasanjo, with his vast experience in regional diplomacy, took the opportunity to reflect on the historical context of peace initiatives, mentioning his involvement in peace-building efforts dating back to the 1960s. His reflections underscored the long-standing dedication to resolving regional conflicts and fostering stability across Africa.
Speaker Wetangula, drawing from his own extensive experience in diplomacy during his tenure as Foreign Minister, shared valuable insights from his collaboration with the late President of the United Republic of Tanzania, His Excellency Benjamin Mkapa. The late President Mkapa played a pivotal role in advancing reconciliation and dialogue in the DRC, and Wetangula acknowledged the importance of such collaborative efforts in the pursuit of peace.
“I take this opportunity to commend the sustained and reinvigorated diplomatic engagements by African statesmen and regional bodies aimed at resolving the protracted conflict in the Great Lakes region,” said Speaker Wetangula. “It is through high-level mediation, such as that of President Obasanjo and his esteemed colleagues, that we can hope to achieve lasting peace, stability, and development.”
The Speaker highlighted the importance of collective political will in resolving conflicts and fostering regional cooperation. He emphasized that Africa's peace-building efforts should continue to be championed by both national and regional leaders, working in unison to address the complex challenges facing the East and Central African region.
“Through collaborative efforts, such as these, we can make significant strides toward resolving conflicts, ensuring peace, and fostering sustainable development across our region,” Wetangula concluded.
The ongoing mediation efforts, led by respected African statesmen like President Obasanjo, continue to be critical in addressing the tensions between the DRC and Rwanda, and in contributing to the broader stability of the Great Lakes region. As the peace process moves forward, the involvement of such high-level leaders underscores the determination of the continent to secure a peaceful and prosperous future for its people.
