The National Assembly Committee on Sports and Culture has expressed its dissatisfaction with the Ministry of Sports’ response to concerns about the alleged mismanagement of funds allocated for sports development in Kenya.
During a meeting chaired by Hon. Dan Wanyama, the Committee criticized the Ministry's response, stating that it failed to adequately address the queries raised about the management of the Sports Fund. The Committee noted that the response lacked sufficient detail and left several important issues unresolved.
The inquiry follows a statement requested by Isiolo County MP, Hon. Mumina Bonaya, who had raised concerns over the transparency and accountability in the use of the Sports, Arts, and Social Development Fund (SASDF). Specifically, Hon. Bonaya had called for a detailed explanation of the criteria used by the Kenya Academy of Sports and the Fund to identify and assess the needs for sports development in the country, as well as a breakdown of how funds allocated for sports and related activities are spent.
Hon. Wanyama, who expressed dissatisfaction with the response provided by the Ministry, emphasized that the Committee would not accept incomplete or vague explanations. "Having gone through the response from the Sports Ministry, the Committee is not convinced that the response fully addressed the queries raised by Hon. Gollo," he stated, referring to another MP who had raised questions about the fund's management.
He further directed the Ministry to compile a more comprehensive report, thoroughly responding to the concerns raised by Hon. Gollo before re-submitting it for review.
Hon. Bonaya, who was present during the session, also voiced her disappointment. "The details in the report do not fully address my concerns. The response is very shallow and lacks the necessary depth," she remarked, reiterating her call for greater accountability in the management of sports funds.
Hon. Wanyama reassured her that the Committee would continue to pursue the matter and ensure that all outstanding issues were thoroughly addressed, fulfilling its oversight responsibilities. The Committee’s insistence on further scrutiny reflects growing concerns over the effective use of public funds allocated for sports development in Kenya.
As the issue unfolds, many are awaiting a more detailed and transparent response from the Ministry of Sports, as pressure mounts for greater accountability in the management of the SASDF.
