State Department for Correctional Services Launches Monthly Tree Planting Campaign

The State Department for Correctional Services has officially launched a monthly tree planting campaign aimed at promoting environmental conservation and supporting national ecosystem restoration efforts. The launch took place at the Kitengela GK Prison, with Principal Secretary Dr. Salome Beacco leading the ceremony.

Speaking during the launch, Dr. Beacco emphasized that the initiative aligns with President William Ruto's national tree-growing and landscape restoration agenda. The campaign will see tree planting activities held every first Thursday of the month across various correctional facilities nationwide.

Dr. Beacco highlighted the Department’s ongoing commitment to the National Landscape and Ecosystem Restoration Program. She revealed that the program aims to plant 100 million trees annually. To date, over 81,394 seedlings have been planted on prison lands, approximately 40,000 trees have been donated to local organizations and communities, and over 10,000 trees have been sold for further distribution.

During Thursday’s launch, over 3,000 indigenous trees were planted at the Kitengela GK Prison. The event was part of a simultaneous nationwide campaign, with tree planting taking place at all correctional facilities across the country.

The ceremony was attended by Commissioner General of Prisons Patrick Aranduh, Probation and Aftercare Secretary Dr. Christine Obondi, and other key staff members from the State Department for Correctional Services.

This initiative is seen as a significant step in the country’s environmental conservation efforts, with correctional facilities playing a vital role in supporting the national drive to restore and protect the country's landscapes.
