Eli Mwanza, a resident of Mumias, Kakamega County, is now celebrating a remarkable recovery after undergoing complex spinal fusion surgery at Tophill Hospital in Eldoret. The surgery, led by Dr. Florentius Koech and his medical team, took place on December 6, 2024, and was followed by a successful recovery period, marking a life-changing turnaround for Mwanza.
Mwanza had been suffering from severe lower back pain, which had significantly impacted his quality of life. His symptoms were so debilitating that he had difficulty walking, passing urine, and performing basic daily activities. After extensive medical testing, including MRIs, Dr. Koech diagnosed Mwanza with spinal stenosis, a condition that required immediate attention to relieve pressure on his nerves and stabilize his spine.
The Surgery and Recovery Process
The surgery was performed with precision and care, and Mwanza was discharged from the hospital on December 12, 2024. Following the procedure, Dr. Koech advised Mwanza to stay in Eldoret for post-operative care due to the distance and risks involved in returning to his home in Mumias. During this period, he was placed under careful supervision, including having a nurse assist him with bed baths to ensure proper wound care without disturbing the staples that were holding the skin together.
In an exclusive interview, Mwanza expressed his gratitude toward the hospital staff, particularly the nurses, for their diligent care during his stay. "The nurses did a thorough job of cleaning the sides of the wound, ensuring the staples were not touched, and helping me recover in a safe environment," Mwanza said.
Dr. Koech had advised Mwanza to avoid bending or stretching during his recovery to prevent any strain on his back. Over the next several weeks, Mwanza adhered to the doctor's recommendations and was cautious with his movements. On his follow-up visit on December 24, 2024, Dr. Koech gave him the green light to return to Mumias, though he continued his recovery process with the same guidelines in place.
A Full Recovery and Positive Outlook
Fast forward to February 4, 2025, when Mwanza returned for a two-month review. Dr. Koech confirmed that his recovery was progressing exceptionally well. "The cartilage plates and screws that were inserted into his spine are growing in perfectly," said Dr. Koech. "There is a 100% success rate with the surgery, and I am pleased to report that Mwanza is now pain-free and able to walk without assistance."
Mwanza, now able to bend and perform many of his daily activities with ease, expressed his deep satisfaction with the surgery and his recovery. "I feel like a new person," he said. "It will take some time to regain full mobility, like driving, but I am confident that I will return to my normal life."
He also shared advice for others suffering from similar conditions, urging them to seek medical help without delay and ensure they are well-informed about the expertise and reputation of the healthcare providers they choose. "I endured the pain for years, but I am so grateful that I found the right place and the right surgeon. Tophill Hospital has state-of-the-art equipment and a highly skilled team. The cost here was also far more affordable than going abroad for similar treatment," he noted.
Dr. Koech Reflects on the Success
Dr. Koech, who had been closely monitoring Mwanza's condition for months, praised his perseverance throughout the recovery process. "When Mwanza first came to us, his quality of life had significantly deteriorated," Dr. Koech explained. "We knew the surgery was necessary, and despite his age, we proceeded with it to alleviate the pressure on his nerves. It has been a rewarding experience to see him recover so well."
A Testament to Medical Excellence
Mwanza's journey is a testament to the importance of early intervention, skilled medical care, and the power of following post-operative instructions. With the success of his surgery, he is now on the path to returning to his normal life, and he credits his healing process to the expertise and care provided by Dr. Koech and the entire medical team at Tophill Hospital.
"I am now stable, I can walk, and I feel blessed to be alive and well. I hope my story inspires others facing similar challenges to make the decision to seek the right medical help and follow their doctor's advice," Mwanza said with gratitude.
