Susan Nakhumicha Faces Vetting Questions Over Procurement Irregularities

Susan Nakhumicha, nominated as Kenya’s Permanent Representative to the UN Habitat in Nairobi, appeared before the National Assembly’s Defence, Intelligence, and Foreign Relations Committee today for vetting. During the session, she was questioned about procurement irregularities that occurred at the Ministry of Health when she served as Cabinet Secretary.

One of the key points of contention came from Belgut Member of Parliament, Nelson Koech, who asked Nakhumicha about the involvement of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua in a Ksh. 3.7 billion tender for procuring mosquito nets for the Kenya Medical Supplies Authority (KEMSA). This question follows Gachagua’s impeachment proceedings in October 2024, where he was accused of using his executive powers to secure the tender for his sons.

Responding to the inquiry, Nakhumicha stated that she first learned of Gachagua’s alleged involvement during the impeachment process. She clarified, “With the information that I was given, his involvement was not there. I got to learn of his involvement when the House was going through the impeachment process. That is how I got to learn that most likely he had been.”

The former Cabinet Secretary also addressed the challenges she faced during her tenure, particularly the 56-day doctors' strike, which she described as one of the hardest issues to manage. Nakhumicha admitted that she had failed to resolve the strike promptly, noting the emotional toll it took on her. “I will take them as occupational hazards, and even in this job that I am taking, I am sure other issues might come up. I am happy to deal with them when they do,” she said.

Her vetting session has attracted significant attention, especially as she prepares to represent Kenya at the United Nations Habitat in Nairobi. If confirmed, Nakhumicha will take up the important role amidst questions surrounding her previous tenure in government.
