Teachers' unions in Bungoma County have vowed to push for the removal of the Director of Education, Pius Ng'oma, accusing him of corruption, harassment of school headteachers, and poor performance in the education sector.

Led by Augustine Luketelo, the Secretary-General of the Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET), and Robert Mandila, the Joint Secretary of the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT), the unions have raised serious concerns about Ng'oma’s conduct in office. They claim that he has been constantly demanding money from headteachers, which has severely strained his relationship with school principals across the county.

"The harassment of headteachers has reached alarming levels," Luketelo said. "This has caused unnecessary tension in our schools, and the standard of education in Bungoma County has greatly suffered."

The unions further criticized Ng'oma for the deteriorating state of school sports in the county. According to the teachers, the performance of Bungoma's schools in sports has significantly declined since Ng'oma assumed the role of Director of Education, with the situation being a stark contrast to previous years.

Additionally, the unions have accused Ng'oma of being involved in corruption, specifically regarding the use of education funds in the county. They allege that the Director has failed to provide transparency regarding the expenditure of funds meant for the development of education in Bungoma, further fueling their demand for his removal from office.

"This is a direct response to the ongoing misuse of office by Pius Ng'oma," Mandila stated. "He has not been forthcoming with information about the management of education resources, and this lack of transparency is unacceptable."

Frustration has been mounting as union leaders have made repeated attempts to meet Ng'oma to discuss these issues but have been unsuccessful in reaching him. They have also claimed that the Director is allegedly using his influence, including bribing officials at the Teachers Service Commission (TSC), to remain in his position despite widespread complaints.

In response, the unions have vowed to collaborate with local politicians and other leaders in the county to ensure that Ng'oma is transferred to another position. They have called on the government and the relevant commissions to act swiftly and transfer Ng'oma, urging that a new director be appointed in his place.

"We will not allow Pius Ng'oma to continue holding meetings with teachers in this county," Luketelo declared. "We will do everything within our power to ensure that he is removed from office."

However, when contacted for a comment, Pius Ng'oma, who was in the field at the time, denied the allegations. He dismissed the accusations as unfounded and untrue, claiming that he has always acted in the best interests of education in Bungoma County.

The standoff between the teachers' unions and the Director of Education has sparked widespread debate, and the pressure is mounting on the relevant authorities to address the concerns raised by the unions in a timely manner. The outcome of this dispute could have significant implications for the future of education management in the county.
