Tourism CS Rebecca Miano Leads High-Level Meeting on Ecosystem-Based Conservation Policy

Tourism and Wildlife Cabinet Secretary Rebecca Miano has lauded the collaborative efforts of a diverse group of experts and stakeholders working on the formulation of Kenya’s Integrated Ecosystem-Based Conservation Policy, a transformative initiative born out of a presidential directive.

Speaking during a high-level meeting in Nairobi, CS Miano expressed her appreciation for what she described as “a room full of conservation spirit,” commending the team’s blend of experience, expertise, passion, and patriotism.

“This is a convergence of wisdom, vision, and love for country,” said Miano, as she hosted the technical mapping team spearheading the development of the national conservation blueprint. “It is a joy to witness such committed minds shaping a future where our ecosystems are protected, restored, and sustainably managed.”

The appointed mapping team includes some of Kenya’s most respected conservationists and environmental researchers: Dr. Joseph Mukeka, Daniel Muteti, Joseph Gathua, Lucy Njino, Lucy Waruingi, Dr. Mohamed Said, Rose Mayienda, Victor Mose, Dr. Festus Ihwagi, Shem Kifugo, and Horris Wanyama.

Their mandate involves the comprehensive mapping of Kenya’s critical ecosystems, compiling and reviewing existing environmental data, conducting new scientific research, and analyzing ecosystem health. The team will also formulate a governance framework and a financial martial plan to support long-term policy implementation.

Also in attendance were researchers from Strathmore University’s Research and Consultancy Centre, legal experts led by Dr. Ken Nyaundi, and social and economic scientists, all contributing to the multi-disciplinary approach required for such an ambitious policy.

CS Miano extended special thanks to development partners present at the meeting, including The Nature Conservancy (TNC), the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW), and the Liz Claiborne & Art Ortenberg Foundation, who are providing technical and financial support for the initiative.

The Integrated Ecosystem-Based Conservation Policy aims to guide national planning and development through a lens of environmental sustainability, ensuring that Kenya’s rich biodiversity is protected amid expanding infrastructure, agriculture, and population growth.

“The work ahead is critical, but with this team and our partners, I am confident that we will deliver a groundbreaking policy that safeguards our ecosystems for generations to come,” Miano concluded.

The policy is expected to set the standard for ecosystem management not just in Kenya, but across the African continent.
