A somber mood has engulfed Nandet Village in Cheptiret Location, Uasin Gishu County, after the body of a 35-year-old man was retrieved from a local dam on Monday morning.
Protas Marindich, a father of two, tragically drowned on Sunday while bathing in the dam located at Nandet farm in Kapchebii village, Cheptiret-Kipchamo Ward, Kesses Sub County.
According to area Assistant Chief Truphena Rugut, the incident occurred when Marindich slipped and fell into the water. Despite efforts by locals to locate him, it was not until Monday that the Uasin Gishu County Fire Brigade successfully recovered his body.
Chief Fire Officer David Sitati confirmed that the county’s emergency response team was dispatched to the scene following a distress call. The team managed to retrieve the body from the private dam after hours of searching.
“It is unfortunate that we’ve lost a life. We urge residents to avoid swimming or going near dams and swampy areas, especially during this rainy season,” said Sitati.
The body was transported to the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital mortuary by officers from Cheptiret Police Station for preservation and further investigation.
Local leaders and family members have called for increased safety awareness around water bodies in the region to prevent similar incidents in the future.
