Residents of Kermetio village in Uasin Gishu County are mourning the loss of two young men who tragically lost their lives early on Tuesday morning in a heartbreaking incident. Ariel Lumilio, an 18-year-old Form Four student at Racecourse Secondary School, and 28-year-old Hillary Kipngetich Cheruiyot, both close friends, died after an attempt to clean a local borehole led to disaster.
According to Kabongo area Assistant Chief Wilson Kosgey and Kermetio village elder Paul Biwot, the young men were working together to clean the borehole when the tragic accident occurred. Lumilio was the first to drown, prompting Kipngetich to attempt a rescue. Sadly, Kipngetich also succumbed to the dangerous conditions and drowned while trying to save his friend.
The Uasin Gishu County Fire Brigade was quickly called to the scene. Uasin Gishu Chief Fire Officer David Sitati reported that the county has seen an increase in cases of suffocation-related deaths while cleaning boreholes in recent months. He urged residents to avoid attempting to clean boreholes unless properly trained, highlighting the importance of safety in such hazardous work.
The fire brigade successfully retrieved the bodies of the two young men, who were then transported to Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital Mortuary by Kiambaa police officers.
The community remains in shock as they come to terms with the tragic loss of two promising lives. Local authorities continue to raise awareness about the dangers associated with untrained borehole cleaning, aiming to prevent future accidents.
