Uasin Gishu Rallies for Climate Action with Tree Planting and Eco-Football Match

In a powerful show of environmental commitment, Uasin Gishu County held a tree planting exercise and an environmental football match at Kerita Grounds over the weekend, reinforcing the county’s pledge to combat climate change and restore ecosystems.

The activities, conducted in collaboration with Moi University, form part of the build-up to the upcoming International Conference on Renewable Energy, Climate Change, and Ecosystem Restoration, set to take place in Eldoret. The event brought together students, local leaders, environmentalists, and residents, united by a common goal—to safeguard the planet.

Speaking at the event, Uasin Gishu Deputy Governor Evans Kapkea emphasized the importance of consistent, grassroots action in the fight against climate change.

“Safeguarding our planet begins with small, consistent actions that inspire lasting change. Today, from planting hope in the soil to kicking for a cause on the pitch, we are building momentum toward a more sustainable future,” said Kapkea.

Participants planted hundreds of indigenous tree seedlings, aimed at restoring green cover and improving biodiversity in the area. The football match, dubbed “Kick for Climate,” served not only as entertainment but also as a platform to raise awareness about environmental conservation among youth and the wider community.

“As we face the realities of climate change, everyone has a role to play. These activities are a reminder that protecting and restoring our environment starts with us—right here in our communities,” added the Deputy Governor.

The county government has pledged to continue partnering with institutions and communities to promote sustainable practices and ensure the outcomes of the upcoming international conference translate into long-term local impact.

The Eldoret conference, which is expected to attract global experts, policymakers, and environmental stakeholders, will spotlight innovations and policy solutions in renewable energy, ecosystem restoration, and climate resilience.
