25th Anniversary of The 1998 Nairobi Terror Attack
On August 7, 1998, the AlQaeda terror network conducted a nearly simultaneous bomb attack targeting the American embassies in Nairobi and Dar es Salaam, in neighbouring Tanzania.
During the attack, 224 people died and more than 5,000 others suffered injuries, in the worst terrorist attack in Kenya’s history.
It is after the attack that the Anti-Terrorism Police Unit (ATPU) was established to among others investigate, prevent and disrupt terror related cases.
Kenya’s preparedness to respond to terrorism and violent extremism has since then improved tremendously, with the government investing heavily in the training, tooling and equipping of security personnel to respond to this and other emerging security threats.
As the country marks 25 years since this heinous attack, DCI reassures all Kenyans of its commitment to the safety and security of every citizen and calls for the continued partnership with the public, since security is a collective responsibility.
