In a shocking revelation, a wave of discontent has swept through the music industry as musicians decry the alleged mismanagement of royalties by the Music Copyright Society of Kenya (MCSK) and other royalty-collecting bodies.

Prominent names in the industry have come forward to demand transparency and accountability in the handling of artists’ hard-earned earnings.

Renowned musician Reuben Kigame, known for his soul-stirring melodies and unwavering advocacy for artists’ rights, minced no words as he voiced his concern over the issue. “It’s disheartening to see fellow artists being denied what is rightfully theirs. The music industry thrives on the dedication and talent of its creators, and they deserve to be fairly compensated for their work,” Kigame stated emphatically.

The outcry stems from allegations that MCSK, among other organizations, has been withholding significant portions of artists’ royalties, with some musicians allegedly receiving only a fraction of what they are owed. This has left many artists struggling to make ends meet, despite their contributions to the vibrant Kenyan music scene.

One affected artist, who chose to remain anonymous, lamented, “We pour our hearts and souls into our music, only to be shortchanged by the very institutions meant to protect our interests. It’s a betrayal of trust and a slap in the face to all musicians.”

The list of affected artists continues to grow, with names spanning various genres and regions across the country. Calls for action have intensified, with demands for a thorough investigation into the alleged malpractices and swift justice for those responsible.

In response to the mounting pressure, authorities such as the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) and the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) have been urged to launch inquiries into the matter. “We cannot allow such blatant disregard for artists’ rights to go unchecked. The perpetrators must be held accountable, and measures put in place to prevent such injustices from recurring,” remarked a spokesperson for the Artists’ Rights Advocacy Group.

As the music community rallies together in solidarity, the spotlight remains firmly fixed on MCSK and other royalty-collecting bodies, with the hopes of ushering in a new era of transparency and fairness for all artists.
