Understanding Metrology With Dr. Henry Rotich
Metrology is the science of measurement and its application.
As the world marked World Metrology Day on Monday 20th May 2024, themed “Sustainability” the Mount Kenya Times caught up with Dr. Henry Rotich, Director of Metrology and Testing at the Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS). Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) is the premier organization responsible for the provision of standardization, measurement, and conformity assessment services.
Dr. Rotich noted: “Accurate measurements are essential for monitoring and managing resources efficiently, reducing waste, and minimizing environmental impact. We work and apply science to make sure that measurements are accurate in different sectors. Measurements are the cornerstone of quality infrastructure, due to their profound impact on every aspect of our lives: from industry to innovation to commerce and conservation. Metrology measurements are critical in alleviating climate change.
Dr. Rotich further noted:
“Kenya became a signatory to the Meter Convention in the year 2010. Currently there are only five countries who are full members of the Meter Convention in Africa. This year as we mark the World Metrology Day, the theme is measurement for sustainability. We measure today for sustainable future. This theme underscores the crucial role that scientific measurements play in promoting sustainability and addressing challenges facing the environment which is core to the existence of our planet.
Sustainability is about meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of the future generations to meet their own needs. It means we become responsible citizens, that we care about those who come after us.
Metrology as a science of measurement is integral role to achieving this goal by providing accurate and reliable measurements. Metrology informs decision making, promotes efficiency, and facilitates the development of sustainable, practices across the various sectors.”
