Great news for smallholder tea farmers! Over 650,000 small holder tea farmers are set to benefit from subsidized fertilizer.

CS Hon Mithika Linturi has received 47,800 MT of NPK fertilizer at the Kenya Ports Authority in Mombasa, marking the first shipment of a total of 92,737 MT purchased through KTDA Foundation to support tea farmers. The government is keen on supporting farmers by making the fertilizer available up to the factory level

This fertilizer will be bagged at the port and then efficiently distributed to farmers via the SGR, reaching them at the nearest tea buying centers as soon as this coming weekend. The second shipment will arrive by mid-November.

There are no extra costs for farmers in transporting the fertilizer from factory stores to the tea buying centers! This will further lower the cost of production.

The CS also affirmed that the government will be opening up of orthodox tea lines to increase farmers’ incomes due to the good prices it fetches in the market.

The government is determined to ensure farmers are well-prepared for the upcoming short rains.
