Azimio Principles Dismiss Taskforce for Debt Audit as Government Ploy

In response to ongoing anti-government protests, the government’s announcement of a taskforce mandated to audit the national debt within three months has been met with skepticism and criticism from the Azimio coalition.

Led by Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka, the coalition has denounced the initiative, alleging it to be a deceptive maneuver aimed at placating public unrest rather than addressing substantive issues.

“The formation of this taskforce is merely a facade meant to deceive Kenyans,” stated Kalonzo Musyoka during a gathering in Meru, accompanied by former Cabinet Secretary for Defence Eugene Wamalwa.

“Transparency and accountability are crucial demands from the government, not cosmetic audits that skirt the real problems of nepotism, corruption, and tribalism.”

The coalition’s criticism aligns with widespread sentiments among protestors, particularly the youth, whose recent demonstrations have underscored grievances over governance failures and socioeconomic disparities. “The awakening of our youth has brought to light the deep-seated issues of inequality and injustice in our country,” remarked Musyoka. “We commend their efforts in pushing for a more equitable society.”

During the Saba Saba celebrations in Meru, Eugene Wamalwa echoed these sentiments, praising the Law Society of Kenya (LSK) President Faith Odhiambo for rejecting what he described as an attempt to sanitize a failing regime. “We stand with millions of Kenyans who demand real change, not superficial audits,” Wamalwa asserted. “It is time for action to ensure accountability and justice prevail.”

The leaders affirmed their commitment to unity within the coalition and pledged continued support for grassroots movements advocating for systemic reforms. As the country navigates through a period of heightened political tension, their message resonates with calls for substantive reforms rather than symbolic gestures from the government.
