In a landmark decision, Governor Johnson Sakaja of Nairobi County has signed off on the budget for the Financial Bill 2024/2025, marking it as the highest approved budget in the county’s history.

The budget, totaling Ksh 43.56 billion, emphasizes ambitious development projects aimed at enhancing infrastructure and public services across Nairobi.

Presented to the Nairobi County Assembly by Mr. Charles Kerich, the County Executive Committee Member, the budget outlines key allocations intended to drive progress and improve living standards for residents. A significant portion of the budget, Ksh 22.5 billion, is expected to be transferred from the national government. This includes Ksh 20.6 billion from projected own-source revenues and an additional Ksh 1 billion allocated to the facilities improvement fund.

Highlighting the county’s commitment to enhancing public services, Mr. Kerich announced a Ksh 287 million allocation aimed at completing the construction of borough offices, sub-county offices, and ward offices. This initiative seeks to decentralize services and make governance more accessible to the people of Nairobi.

Furthermore, the health sector has been allocated Ksh 200 million, dedicated to ensuring affordable healthcare and sufficient non-pharmaceutical supplies across county health facilities. An additional Ksh 1 billion has been earmarked for the construction, equipping, and rehabilitation of healthcare centers, underscoring the county’s focus on improving healthcare infrastructure.

Education also remains a top priority, with Ksh 800 million allocated to school feeding programs. Governor Sakaja emphasized that this initiative aims to enhance the nutritional status of learners, thereby boosting school attendance, academic performance, and facilitating smoother transitions to higher levels of education. The program targets to benefit over 250,000 children in Nairobi County.

In a bid to support local communities, Ksh 7 million has been allocated for each ward, totaling Ksh 857 million, aimed at student bursaries to support education access and affordability.

The County Assembly has been requested to approve Ksh 120 million for the construction of fire stations in Kangemi, Gikomba, and Jamhuri. This initiative seeks to bolster emergency response capabilities and ensure the safety of Nairobi residents.
