Government Officials Review tht Progress on Fluorspar Processing Plant Revival

In a significant development for Kenya’s mining sector, the Principal Secretary for Mining, Elijah Mwangi, alongside Cabinet Secretary Mithika Linturi and Governor Hassan Joho, recently reviewed the progress of the Fluorspar Processing Plant revival project in Elgeyo Marakwet County.

This update meeting took place with officials from SOFAX Fluorspar Kenya Ltd, the investor behind the project.

The Fluorspar Processing Plant, situated in Kimwarer, Keiyo South Constituency, was handed over to SOFAX Fluorspar Kenya Ltd on June 30th. The revival of the plant, which involves an initial investment of KSh 4.8 billion, is poised to boost Kenya’s mineral processing capabilities significantly. The recent review covered various aspects, including geological and environmental studies as well as operational preparations.

Cabinet Secretary Linturi expressed satisfaction with the progress of the project but emphasized that its benefits should extend to the local community. He underscored the importance of creating local employment opportunities, utilizing local materials, and investing in community empowerment programs. This approach aligns with the government’s commitment to reforming the mining sector and promoting mineral investments that enhance value addition within Kenya.

The operationalization of the Fluorspar Processing Plant is expected to result in the first shipment of fluorspar by March next year. Senior officials from the State Department for Mining were also present, highlighting the government’s ongoing support and oversight of this significant industrial initiative.
