A retired teacher has taken his own life over a loan he could not repay on time.
The retiree Leonard Achila 72 years-old hanged himself using a rope on a tree in his compound.
The incident which has left his family and residents in shock and grief happened in Basa South location, Rachuonyo East Sub County.
According to Tom Ondiro, the area Chief, the teacher had committed the act over Sh. 120, 000, the money he borrowed from a financial organization for undisclosed reason but he has been unable to honour repaying the money.
“Mzee had told the family that he will commit suicide over the money,” the Chief said
The Chief further revealed he personally reached the teacher through a phone call after one of his sons reported the matter to him.
He said Mzee had promised to remain calm and that he wouldn’t take his own life as family sought solution.
However, the Chief said the family was shocked after they stumbled on his hanging body from one of the trees in his compound, dead.
He said the body has since been removed from the scene by police and transferred to Rachuonyo South Sub County hospital mortuary in Oyugis awaiting post mortem examination.
The Chief has since called on the residents to confide with close family member or anybody they trust whenever they have a problem for a quick solution.
“Taking your own life is not a solution to your problem,” he said.
