Elgeyo Marakwet County carries Kidney Awareness Walk
The County government Department of Health today carried out awareness walk in Iten Town to mark the World wide “Kidney Day”.
The in-coming CEC Abraham Barsosio led the procession that started at Equity Bank upto Iten County Referral Hospital.
This year’s theme is: ‘kidney health for all’ and the the event is celebrated annually to create awareness for all people to bridge the knowledge gap to better kidney care.
As part of the celebration, a free screening has been made available for the public at the County Renal Unit at the Iten County Referral Hospital.
The renal unit which was operationalized in 2020 has been serving an average of 8 patients per day who come for dialysis from Monday to Saturday.
Dr Sylvia Mibey, a consultant physician at ICRH, cautioned against use of over-counter drugs but instead asked patients to visit health facilities for a proper diagnosis.
She further urged the people to drink enough water, take little salt and to eat unprocessed food.
The operationalized Iten renal unit is fully equipped and run by Six nurses and One nutritionist.
Mr Barsosio emphasized the need for communities to to embrace traditional food instead of using Genetically Modified organic Food GMOs.
Health Chief Officer Mary Kipchumba, Acting Health Services Director Patrick Kosgei and ICRH Medical Superintendent Benjamin Kimaile among others were in attendance.
